Monumento Al Pipila

Juan José de los Reyes Martínez Amaro was born in 1782 in the Guanajuato region of Mexico, working as a mining laborer. He acquired the nickname El Pípila (meaning 'female turkey' in local slang) because his freckled face resembled a turkey egg. Despite his humble origins, he later became one of the most legendary hero figures in Mexico's War of Independence.

On September 28, 1810, during the Siege of Guanajuato in Mexico's War of Independence, El Pípila demonstrated extraordinary courage. At that time, Spanish royal forces had occupied the Alhóndiga de Granaditas (a large public granary building that served as a natural fortress due to its sturdy structure and few, high windows) as a defensive stronghold, and the rebel forces had failed in multiple attempts to capture it. El Pípila carried a heavy stone slab on his back as a bulletproof shield, braved a hail of bullets to charge the gate, and successfully set the wooden gate on fire with his torch and tar, opening the way for the rebel forces to capture the stronghold. This feat directly led to the defeat of the Spanish royal forces and became a key turning point in Mexico's War of Independence.

El Pípila's heroic deeds left an indelible mark on Mexican history. To commemorate this Independence War hero, the Guanajuato municipal government built this 28-meter high obelisk monument on Cerro de San Miguel in 1939. The monument was jointly designed by sculptor Juan Fernando Olaguíbel and architect Augusto Petriccioli, and has now become one of Guanajuato's most iconic landmarks and an important symbol of the Mexican independence spirit. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors come to visit and pay tribute to this hero who dedicated himself to Mexican independence.
