How to Get to El Pípila Monument in Guanajuato

Last updated: October 2026

Reaching Guanajuato's most famous viewpoint

The Monumento al Pípila stands on Cerro de San Miguel, just east of Guanajuato's historic center. There are three main ways up: walking the cobbled streets, riding the teleférico (funicular) behind Teatro Juárez, or taking a taxi or car to the upper lookout road.

Walking is free, the funicular is the easiest, and if you travel with kids, luggage or limited mobility, a taxi or driving up to the top is the most comfortable option.

Quick facts for planning your trip

Location
Cerro de San Miguel, beside Guanajuato's historic center
Walking from center
20-30 minutes uphill via streets and stairways
Funicular (teleférico)
About 1 minute; adult around MX$35 one way / MX$70 round trip
By car or taxi
Via the panoramic road; limited parking at the top
From the airport
León airport (BJX), about 1.5 hours by road

On foot from the historic center

The classic route starts near Jardín de la Unión or Teatro Juárez and climbs cobbled streets, stairways and ramps for about 20-30 minutes. It is steep but scenic, passing small shops and intermediate viewpoints.

A popular trick is to ride up and walk down (or the reverse): you get the aerial view plus the street-level feel of Guanajuato's famous alleys. During the day the route is busy and feels safe.

By funicular (teleférico)

The lower station is behind Teatro Juárez, next to Jardín de la Unión; look for the small ticket booth and the glass waiting area. The funicular runs both ways, so you can buy a ticket at either end.

From the upper station you step straight onto the monument plaza, next to the 28-meter sculpture, the viewpoints and craft stalls. Tickets are usually bought round trip; check the tariff board at the window, as prices can change.

By taxi, rideshare or car

A taxi or rideshare from the center costs a fraction of the funicular and drops you closer to the top. The panoramic road winds up the mountain with limited traffic, so agree on the price before going up.

There is parking at the top, though reduced on weekends and holidays. If driving yourself, arrive early to secure a spot, especially at sunset.

From León airport (BJX) and other cities

The nearest international airport is León (BJX), about 90-100 km and 1.5 hours by road to Guanajuato. From there you can rent a car, take an executive bus or a shared transfer to the center.

If you arrive by bus from Mexico City, Querétaro or San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato's terminal is on the outskirts; from there a taxi drops you in the center, and you choose how to climb to El Pípila.

Practical tips

Bring water and comfortable shoes if walking: the climb can be hot and the summit windy. At sunset, arrive early to find a spot and enjoy the view before the funicular closes.

The pedestrian access and the open-air plaza are free; monument access has a general admission of about MX$13 (2026 local tariff). The funicular is paid transport on top of that.
