Hours & entry

The Monumento al Pípila mixes three things people often confuse: the plaza and open-air viewpoint are free; entry to the monument has a general admission of about MX$13 (local 2026 tariff); and the funicular that takes you up is a separate paid ride.
This page clarifies each one, with the published hours and tips so you aren't surprised on arrival. Prices can change, so it's always worth confirming at the ticket window.
The terrace, railing and viewpoints over the city are free to access: you can walk up, take photos and roam the plaza without paying anything. The same applies if you hike up the stairways on foot.
Entry to the monument's base or interior carries a general admission of about MX$13 under the local 2026 tariff. The funicular, by contrast, is a separate transport service: you pay its fare whether or not you enter the monument.
The adult fare published by the tourism office has run around MX$35 one way and MX$70 round trip (2024-2025). The most recent 2025-2026 guides cite MX$80 for the adult round trip, so the price may have risen: check the board on arrival.
Children aged 4-11 and seniors with an INAPAM credential usually pay roughly half. Guanajuato residents showing local ID travel at a discount.
The published funicular service is generally Monday to Friday 08:00-21:50, Saturday 09:00-21:50 and Sunday 10:00-20:50. During big events like the Festival Internacional Cervantino, in October, hours are sometimes extended.
The open-air plaza and viewpoint don't close like an enclosed site, but the best light and the safety of being among a crowd are by day and at sunset. If sunset is your plan, arrive at least 30 minutes before the published closing so the descent doesn't feel rushed.
Hours can change on short notice for maintenance, weather or holidays. In high season and on weekends the queue grows after sunset, so buying a round trip up front saves time.
To avoid lines, weekday mornings are the calmest. For the iconic view, arrive 45-60 minutes before sunset and stay through the blue hour.
If you're on a tight budget, walk up (20-30 minutes) and pay only the monument entry if you want to go in; the panorama is free regardless.
